what is art

to me   the most appropriate definition of art is as stated in the 1955 edition of the little oxford dictionary      see  be

its a fine observation of forms and feelings   created by a keen patient seeker who s able to express them      to be them     and by that   to meet art    its the end result of perception   discipline   passion   accident  and coincidence

its not a thing that you see    it is a way     a struggle to understand    to make others understand    a struggle to make a difference     a way to reveal the unknown to those who lack the experience of seeing it 

yet    its a permanent question mark in the minds of those who want to know what s happening    like having an itch you can t scratch

its the ability to arrest motion     life    in a frame    by artificial means    and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later    when a stranger looks at it    it moves again     since it is life

its to translate thoughts to a portrait visible to other s eyes using the vocabulary of lines    forms    shapes    and colours

i found i could say things with painting that i couldn t say any other way    things i had no words for    it is silent poetry

 

but then again    comes the question   what is not art?

well art is everywhere    except it has to pass through a   creative mind

to that end   i m most confident that art will remain the most astonishing activity of mankind    born out of struggle between wisdom and madness    between dream and reality in our mind    and if art cannot change the world   it can help to change the consciousness and drives of those who would change the world
